Earl Grey stands 40m high above Newcastle’s city centre, facing south overlooking the historical area of Grainger town to the right and the architecturally impressive Grey Street to the left. The Grade I listed monument was erected in 1838 to commemorate the Reform Act of 1832, drafted during Earl Grey's time as Prime Minister. It might well look familiar – the statue was created by Edward Hodges Bailey, who later created Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. Grey’s Monument is open to the public for seasonal and private tours. Climb the narrow spiral staircase inside the column and be rewarded with a burst of sunlight and panoramic views. After climbing all those steps you might be in need of a cup of Earl Grey tea. Relax in style in nearby Café Royal or head to Fenwick’s Foodhall where you can stock up on tea and other treats from luxury and local brands.
